A former lap dancing club in Ropewalks will not be turned into student accommodation, after the developer chose to build serviced apartments instead.

The building at 65 Duke Street, which is currently the home to Rude, was initially subject of a planning application to demolish all but the fascia and build 77 student apartments. However, an amendment to the application instead favours a four-storey serviced apartment building with 75 apartments.

The plans would mean the existing building is demolished, although the frontage will be retained and incorporated into the new design, according to the application by Lady Mia Ltd.

The new building would include an entrance on to Wolstenholme Square, the home of iconic music venue Kazimier, and although the building is not listed the application says it will include a ‘mesh’ design that will be in keeping with the historic context of the area and give a nod to the Ropewalks name.

If approved, the serviced apartments would be one of several new developments on Duke Street, where work is ongoing on an Epic Apart-Hotel and serviced apartments recently opened in the former Le Bateau building. The latter will be joined by Cedar Food and Drink, a gin and small plate specialist, in spring 2015.
