Plans to convert a Liverpool lap dancing club into a serviced apartment complex have been recommended for approval by the city’s head of planning.

Rude on Duke Street will be demolished to make way for a five-storey serviced apartment block with a courtyard and a shop if the plans are approved by the planning committee on Tuesday 21 April. The historic façade of the building at 65 Duke Street will be retained.

The plans were originally for student accommodation but were then changed to serviced apartments after an objection from Councillor Steve Munby, who says it would have jeopardised the future of Cream and Kazimier nightclubs in Wolstenholme Square to the rear of the building.

While Kazimier has since announced its closure in 2016 amid plans to regenerate the opposite side of Wolstenholme Square with homes, shops and cafes, the new, unconnected application for Rude and the surrounding space does not include any student aspects. Nation is set to remain in Wolstenholme Square under new plans for a new venue, which would have impacted on noise for student apartments.

Instead, a total of 75 serviced apartments will be built if the application is approved, making it the third new serviced apartment block on Duke Street after the opening of Le Bateau serviced apartments and Epic Apart Hotel. Other new venues to open their doors on the resurgent street include Filter and Fox in the former Duke St Espresso unit and Cedar Food and Drink in the basement of the former Le Bateau club.
