The campaign to save and restore Woolton Picture H The campaign to save and restore Woolton Picture House - Liverpool's oldest surviving cinema - has taken a huge leap forward thanks to a £100,000 donation from local business Crampton Bros (Coopers) Ltd.

The Liverpool-based company has become the first official 'Picture House Founder', a title reserved for major contributors to the 'It Takes a Village to Open a Cinema' campaign, which is working to raise £700,000 by April 2026 to purchase and refurbish the beloved community landmark.

Built in 1927, Woolton Picture House is the city's only remaining single-screen cinema.

Having been closed since the pandemic, it is now being brought back to life by Kevin Fearon and Gillian Miller, the team behind Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre, who have formed Woolton Cinema CIC - a not-for-profit, community-led organisation dedicated to preserving the building for future generations.
After 43 years on Lark Lane, Maranto’s is set to After 43 years on Lark Lane, Maranto’s is set to begin a new chapter with its biggest refurbishment yet.

Founded by Steve and Ruth Maranto in 1983 - and now under the care of their daughter Anna and her husband Joe - the restaurant will close in January and reopen on Valentine’s Day with an updated look and new features, including a revived bar area and an upstairs games room.

Anna says: “Maranto’s has always been about family and food, and that will never change. It is still the same family, the same recipes and the same welcome, but we are excited to give the building a new lease of life.

“The refurb will help us look to the future while keeping hold of everything people love.

"The menu will stay true to the Italian-American favourites that customers return for, while the interiors will be refreshed with rich greens, mosaic tiling and those little touches like the Tiffany lamps that have been part of Maranto’s since day one.”

Africa Oyé has announced big changes for its 2026 Africa Oyé has announced big changes for its 2026 festival as organisers prepare for a new era for the Sefton Park event.

The UK's biggest celebration of African and Caribbean music and culture will return next summer, following a fallow year in 2025 due to rising infrastructure costs, changing legislation, and the increasingly difficult challenge of keeping the event free.

The festival will return as a ticketed event in 2026, with organisers committed to making it as affordable as possible for its audience.

Paul Duhaney, artistic director Africa Oyé, says: "We couldn't let the festival just disappear off the UK's cultural calendar.

"The board, myself, and the team all agreed that a paid event would be a much better alternative to no Oyé at all, and I hope our loyal audience agree with the decision and keep showing us the support they always have.

"The change will enable us to maintain and build on the quality of the event that people have come to expect and ensure that those attending can do so in safe and relaxed environment."
A huge brand-new padel centre with championship-le A huge brand-new padel centre with championship-level indoor and outdoor courts will open this December in Speke.

Ignite Padel's latest facility will feature six indoor courts, four outdoor covered courts, a licensed bar, a coffee shop, and a retail store where players can shop for racquets, balls, and clothing.

Stephen Broad, partner at Ignite Padel, says: “We have imported all the courts from Spain and they are championship standard quality and LTA approved, meaning they meet the standards set by the Lawn Tennis Association.

"It’s not just about being able to play in all weathers, the indoor game tends to attract more elite players because it is seen as a more pure form.

"It is a different experience to playing outdoors because there’s no wind so you get a truer trajectory on the ball.”

Ignite Padel Speke will be the company’s third site, with plans to open a total of five across the North West within 12 months.

"The dock is a fantastic place with a real community feel, and we can’t wait to welcome both familiar faces and new customers to our new restaurant.

"Our goal is simple, to share our love of fresh, authentic Italian pasta in a place where everyone feels at home."
